DIA MUNDIAL DA RAIVA

This year, our association – ANVETEM (which represents the Veterinarian Doctors working for Municipalities, in Portugal), was informed by DGV (the National Veterinarian Authority) about the celebration of WORLD RABIES DAY. We contacted our associates, inviting them to celebrate this day, involving their respective Executives, Municipalities and local populations. Tthere were several City Halls which were very enthusiastic about celebrating this day, organizing many activities, such as free pet vaccinations, informing sessions in schools, animal adoption campaigns outlining the importance of rabies vaccination, informing Citizens through the main menus of their Municipal sites, doing local and national press-releases about it, spreading the word about “world rabies day”, its logo, materials and numerous initiatives worldwide. Portugal is proud to be rabies free since 1960, and that is certainly due to the annual vaccination campaigns that Municipal Veterinarians have been doing, every year, since 1926. Outlining the relevance of the Fight against this disease, not only from the animal health point of view but particularly from the public health point of view was one of our main goals.
